Black Stainless Steel
KitchenAid announced the first black stainless steel appliances back in late 2015. Today, black stainless steel appliances are available from LG, Samsung, Frigidaire, GE, Whirlpool, and Bosch. Black stainless steel itself is not a paint, but is actually a coating created with an oxidation process by the steel manufacture.
However, there are some appearance differences among black stainless steel from one brand to another. Samsung and LG have added a clear coating to the appliances exterior. If you’re thinking of using black stainless steel in your kitchen, it’s probably a good idea to stick with one brand.
Appliances are always a matter of personal choice. However, it does appear that the black stainless steel has made the cut among enough buyers to have a good future going forward. The black patina with the stainless steel not only has a stylish premium “look”, it is also smudge proof.
On of the advantages of black stainless steel over standard stainless steel is its ease of cleaning. Manufacturers recommend soap and water or even window cleaner. You should avoid using any cleaner with an abrasive. Even if a cleaner is recommended for stainless steel, it may not be safe for black stainless steel.
Black stainless steel offers a premium look, and should work well with just about any cabinetry. It is a durable finish that will last for a lifetime. However, just like all other finishes, scratches are a possibility. Since there is a silver base metal under the oxidized black finish, deep scratches will show. Minor scratches can be easily covered up with a black sharpie.
